Phew, what a week! In addition to the world news this week, I've also been heads down hiring two leaders at ConvertKit. I'm excited to say we hired a new VP of Product this week!
Now we're working on finding a VP of Engineering. Hiring is a lot of work, for the whole team, but it pays huge dividends. I'm looking forward to having a complete leadership team heading into the new year.
Yesterday I was joined by Alyssa Dulin and Tyler Knudtson from the ConvertKit team to talk about running an airbnb side hustle. We talk about everything from renting out your house while you're away to buying multi-family properties to turn into airbnbs. We get into actual numbers and share the different models we've each used to run our airbnbs. I loved this chat with Tyler and Alyssa, if you're running an airbnb or thinking of starting one, this would be a great episode to listen to!
As I mentioned we're now looking for someone to lead our entire engineering organization. If you know someone who has managed large engineering organizations, has serious technical chops, and is an excellent people manager, send them my way! Bonus points if they have scaled with a SaaS company from $25M up to $50M or more.

I never would have read this book based on the title or cover, but it was recommended to me enough times that I went for it. And well, you know what they say about judging a book by its cover!
We talk a lot about culture, and about execution, both of which are important. This book focuses on strategy and competitive advantage, which matter just as much. I love the real world examples he uses to illustrate the powers, and how easy the insights are to translate in to action. I would skip the appendices at the end of each chapter, I found them hard to understand and not that helpful.
Polina writes and curates incredible profiles of incredible people. You will look forward to her newsletter showing up in your inbox every week to dive into another fascinating life or story. She reads enormous amounts of profiles to find the best ones on any given subject. She's also an excellent writer/interviewer herself, I loved the profile she wrote of Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York.

See you next week!

Hey Reader, What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? You’ve probably seen some version of this question before. It’s a good one, though sometimes the answer isn’t immediately obvious. That’s why I like Graham Weaver’s 8 questions for what to do with your life. Graham founded the private equity firm Alpine Investors, and he teaches at Stanford. In Chapter 2 of my upcoming book, The Ladders of Wealth, I credit him with a principle he shared with his MBA students called "worse first",...
Hey Reader, If I could solve only one thing in my business, that would have the biggest impact, what would that be? This is the question every great entrepreneur obsesses over. Rather than trying to do everything at once, you look for the bottleneck and focus on solving that. There’s a book called The Goal by an Israeli physicist named Eliyahu Goldratt. It’s a 1984 business novel that business systems nerds love. However if you’re not a business systems nerd you probably… won’t love it. It’s...
Hey Reader, Have you ever spent money on something and immediately felt guilty afterward? Will Guidara spends his money foolishly on purpose. And he thinks you should too. He once bought an entire barrel of whiskey and put it in his basement. He also put a skee-ball machine in the office. Is he going to get a monetary return on either of these things? No. But that’s kind of the point. He calls it the 95/5 rule: Manage your money and time like a maniac 95% of the time (no expense is too...
