Fighting the battle against resistance

Hi Reader,

I've got some fun personal news: we're expanding the farm!

The property next to ours came up for sale and I couldn't resist putting in an offer. Our goal is to grow our farm (from 4.5 to 9 acres), have a couple of Airbnb houses and maybe one day a tiny house hotel on the land!

FROM TWITTER

My latest AirBnb endeavour

Speaking of real estate, I recently shared a Twitter thread about how our four-plex investment from last year shaped up. I shared detailed costs, how we made decisions, obstacles. With Covid reducing all travel, we aren't quite where we hoped to be, but overall I'm really happy with the investment and plan to do more just like this one.

WHAT I'M READING

A free copy of The War of Art

Being a creator can be hard, like really really hard. Perhaps the hardest part is the battle you fight with yourself. Steven Pressfield's The War of Art is about this resistance we find within ourselves and how to fight it.

Steven has teamed up with Tim Grahl to create an incredible bundle of books to help you conquer that resistance, including a free audiobook of The Art of War. If you are fighting this battle right now, I highly recommend checking it out.

What's your system for establishing principles?

There's no doubt this is a strange time for all of us. We are stuck at home, we've already re-landscaped the yard and painted every room in the house. What's next? What if you took this time to establish or adjust your principles as a creator? Extreme events can often bring things into focus and provide clarity, this could be the perfect time to hone in on what matters most to you and your business. I wrote about how we do this at ConvertKit if you're interested! »

That's it for today, hope you have a great week!

Hey Reader, What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? You’ve probably seen some version of this question before. It’s a good one, though sometimes the answer isn’t immediately obvious. That’s why I like Graham Weaver’s 8 questions for what to do with your life. Graham founded the private equity firm Alpine Investors, and he teaches at Stanford. In Chapter 2 of my upcoming book, The Ladders of Wealth, I credit him with a principle he shared with his MBA students called "worse first",...

Hey Reader, If I could solve only one thing in my business, that would have the biggest impact, what would that be? This is the question every great entrepreneur obsesses over. Rather than trying to do everything at once, you look for the bottleneck and focus on solving that. There’s a book called The Goal by an Israeli physicist named Eliyahu Goldratt. It’s a 1984 business novel that business systems nerds love. However if you’re not a business systems nerd you probably… won’t love it. It’s...

A hundred dollar bill against a plain light background.

Hey Reader, Have you ever spent money on something and immediately felt guilty afterward? Will Guidara spends his money foolishly on purpose. And he thinks you should too. He once bought an entire barrel of whiskey and put it in his basement. He also put a skee-ball machine in the office. Is he going to get a monetary return on either of these things? No. But that’s kind of the point. He calls it the 95/5 rule: Manage your money and time like a maniac 95% of the time (no expense is too...
