Questionable tax strategies, 71% annual returns, and legit ways to grow your creator income

Hey Reader,

In October I'm doing something new with ConvertKit: we're calling it the Grow Your Income Challenge and it's going to be... well a challenge to help you grow your creator income.

A whole cohort will build and launch a product in a month (on ConvertKit Commerce). If you hit certain goals you'll get a cash bonus.

This is perfect for those who already have a small audience and are looking for that extra nudge to get a product launched.

Interested? Hit reply and let me know.

The $7 Billion tax settlement

Sahil Bloom tweeted this story and its crazy and fascinating. A very successful hedge fund found a creative way around short-term capital gains taxes, until the IRS fought them on it. Now they have settled for $7B which likely means the total in unpaid taxes was much higher than that. The more you look, the more you'll see this kind of financial engineering.

WHAT I'M READING

The Man Who Solved The Market by Gregory Zuckerman

If you want to know more about Jim Simons and the Medallion fund check out the book, The Man Who Solved The Market. I read it last year and really enjoyed it. If you're thinking, "but is their success really worth reading about?" this should clear it up for you:

The Medallion fund is considered to be one of the most successful hedge funds ever. It has averaged a 71.8% annual return, before fees, from 1994 through mid-2014. The fund has been closed to outside investors since 1993 and is available only to current and past employees and their families.

WHAT YOU SHOULD ATTEND

The $10k Summit

My friend Khe Hy from Rad Reads talks a lot about how to find and do $10,000 per hour work. If that sounds crazy, you need to read more of his material. He's hosting a free online summit around this idea that starts on October 6th. I spoke at the last one and this one is filled by a bunch of my smartest friends. It's well worth your time.

Hey Reader, What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? You’ve probably seen some version of this question before. It’s a good one, though sometimes the answer isn’t immediately obvious. That’s why I like Graham Weaver’s 8 questions for what to do with your life. Graham founded the private equity firm Alpine Investors, and he teaches at Stanford. In Chapter 2 of my upcoming book, The Ladders of Wealth, I credit him with a principle he shared with his MBA students called "worse first",...

Hey Reader, If I could solve only one thing in my business, that would have the biggest impact, what would that be? This is the question every great entrepreneur obsesses over. Rather than trying to do everything at once, you look for the bottleneck and focus on solving that. There’s a book called The Goal by an Israeli physicist named Eliyahu Goldratt. It’s a 1984 business novel that business systems nerds love. However if you’re not a business systems nerd you probably… won’t love it. It’s...

Hey Reader, Have you ever spent money on something and immediately felt guilty afterward? Will Guidara spends his money foolishly on purpose. And he thinks you should too. He once bought an entire barrel of whiskey and put it in his basement. He also put a skee-ball machine in the office. Is he going to get a monetary return on either of these things? No. But that’s kind of the point. He calls it the 95/5 rule: Manage your money and time like a maniac 95% of the time (no expense is too...
