The credibility gap

Hey Reader,

I just published a new essay called The Audience Shortcut that explores how the right people paying attention changes everything. But there's something I see holding back most skilled professionals from building an audience.

It's what I call the credibility gap.

You know that feeling when someone asks what you do, and you stumble through an explanation? Or when you want to create content but worry people will think, "Who are you to talk about this?"

That's the credibility gap in action.

Here's the thing: you have the expertise. You've been solving problems, building things, managing teams, or mastering your craft for years. You have real stories, hard-earned lessons, and insights that could genuinely help people.

But you don't have authority. The name recognition. The credibility that comes from being known for your expertise.

Maybe you think, "I'm not the leading expert in my field, so why would anyone listen to me?" Or "There are already so many people talking about this stuff."

The breakthrough is realizing that you don't need to be the world's leading expert to be valuable online. You just need to be ahead of someone else and willing to share what you've learned.

  • That client who wanted 47 revisions to their logo? → That's a story worth telling.
  • The code that broke production at 2 AM? → A valuable lesson you can share.
  • The hiring mistake that cost you 3 months? → An insight someone else needs.

Your day-to-day challenges are someone else's unsolved problems.

My friend Nick Huber figured this out better than anyone, and I'm actually doing something exciting with him soon that I'll tell you about in a moment.

Nick had years of experience in the storage business. He knew how to evaluate deals, manage properties, work with contractors, and build operations. But he wasn't just posting generic business advice or motivational quotes.

Instead, he shared his actual deals. Real P&Ls. The ugly truth about what didn't work alongside the wins. He turned his specific expertise into compelling content that attracted exactly the right audience.

That strategic approach to personal branding is what helped him build a following that now drives deal flow for his $150M+ real estate portfolio.

But here's what's interesting about Nick's success: he didn't stumble into it. He was incredibly intentional about which platforms to use, how often to post, what kind of content to create, and how to turn his audience into actual business opportunities.

The gap isn't your expertise—it's knowing how to communicate that expertise effectively online.

Most skilled professionals either:

  1. Never start sharing because they don't feel qualified enough
  2. Try to share but use generic advice that sounds like everyone else
  3. Build some following but don't know how to turn it into business results

The solution isn't to become a better expert. It's to become a better communicator of your existing expertise.

That's exactly what Nick and I want to show you in our upcoming workshop…

Mr Beast's lose 100lbs video

Did you see this Mr Beast video the other week? It already has 162M views, so there's a decent chance you have, but it's really good.

The story telling just grips you the whole way through, and it's amazing to see someone transform their health and fitness so deliberately.

Obviously not everyone has this level of support, but I love videos that inspire life transformations like this.

Hey Reader, I’m excited to share something I’ve been working on for over a year: My new essay, The Audience Shortcut: How the Right People Paying Attention Changes Everything. This is the core idea behind how I went from a string of failed startups to building a $45M/year company with no outside funding. It’s not about going viral or gaining millions of followers. It’s about getting the right people to pay attention—and how that changes everything. In this essay, I share the exact framework I...

Dan Martell's Scaling Credo

Hey Reader, There are 50 things you do in a given week, but what are the 5 that actually matter? Most creators I know are drowning in their own to-do lists. They're posting on seven different platforms, running three different courses, testing five marketing channels, and wondering why nothing seems to gain real traction. The harsh reality is that 80% of what we do doesn't move the needle. We're busy being busy, but we're not building the business we actually want. The antidote to this chaos...

Nathan Barry Speaking at Craft + Commerce 2025

Hey [FIRST NAME GOES HERE], Here's where we're headed: Soon, AI will write podcast scripts optimized to hook attention and deliver perfectly timed punchlines. AI voices will narrate them. AI avatars will perform them, A/B testing whether audiences prefer a 25-year-old woman, a 50-year-old man, or the podcasting baby. AI will cut the clips, write the titles, and push everything to every platform. And then AI bots will consume it all, share it, comment on it. We'll have content that’s: Created...
